The fifth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd is titled Dawn FM. On January 7, 2022, XO and Republic Records released it. Jim Carrey narrates the album, and Quincy Jones and Josh Safdie both make spoken word cameos. Tyler, the Creator and Lil Wayne also contribute guest vocals. The Weeknd, Max Martin, and Oneohtrix Point Never brought in a number of producers, including Swedish House Mafia, Oscar Holter, and Calvin Harris, as executive producers for the album. As a follow-up to his fourth studio album After Hours (2020), The Weeknd characterized the album’s concept as a kind of purgatory—a journey towards the “light at the end of a tunnel”. Dawn FM is an energetic record with dance-pop and synth-pop tracks that draw a lot of inspiration from the electronic dance music, funk, and new wave genres of the 1980s. Music critics gave the album a lot of praise, praising its production and melodies. The album was supported by four singles, “Take My Breath,” “Sacrifice,” “Out of Time,” and “Less than Zero.” “Take My Breath” peaked at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100. In addition to debuting at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, Dawn FM peaked at number one in over ten countries, including the singer-songwriter’s home Canada, Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The Weeknd started the After Hours til Dawn Tour in order to further support Dawn FM and After Hours.
Album : After Hours (Deluxe) [17 SONGS • 1 HOUR AND 5 MINUTES • MAR 20 2020]
The Weeknd released his fourth studio album, After Hours, on March 20, 2020 through XO and Republic Records. It was primarily produced by the Weeknd and includes a range of producers, the most of whom the Weeknd had previously collaborated with: DaHeala, Illangelo, Max Martin, Metro Boomin, and OPN. While there are no features on the standard edition of the album, Ariana Grande is featured on the deluxe edition, and Chromatics and Lil Uzi Vert make cameo appearances on the remixes edition. Themes such as self-loathing, escapism, and loneliness are explored in After Hours. The Weeknd stated that After Hours would be a stylistic departure from Starboy (2016) before the album’s release. The Weeknd’s artistic reinvention has been praised by music journalists for the album, which features elements of dream pop and new wave. The title is taken from the 1985 movie of the same name, and the artwork and aesthetic were influenced by a number of movies, including Casino (1995), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Joker (2019), and Uncut Gems (2019).
Album : My Dear Melancholy, [6 SONGS • 21 MINUTES • MAR 30 2018]
The Weeknd released his debut extended play titled My Dear Melancholy (stylized as My Dear Melancholy). March 30, 2018, saw its release via Republic Records and XO. It’s primarily produced by Frank Dukes, who also serves as the Weeknd’s executive producer. Gesaffelstein, Mike Will Made It, DaHeala, Skrillex, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk, and others have contributed. According to some, the Weeknd’s My Dear Melancholy marks a return to the darker tone of his earlier work, which can be heard in Kiss Land (2013) and Trilogy (2012). The single “Call Out My Name” served as the play’s backing track and peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100. It debuted at the top of the US Billboard 200 and garnered mostly positive reviews.
Album : Starboy [18 SONGS • 1 HOUR AND 8 MINUTES • NOV 25 2016]
The Weeknd released his third studio album, Starboy, via XO and Republic Records on November 25, 2016. Future, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, and Daft Punk all make cameo appearances. The Weeknd and Doc McKinney recruited a range of producers for the album as executive producers, including Diplo, Cashmere Cat, Metro Boomin, Frank Dukes, and Labrinth. Seven singles supported Starboy, including the top-five single “I Feel It Coming” and the US Billboard Hot 100 number-ones “Starboy” and “Die for You” (which peaked on the chart after a remix with Ariana Grande). Critics gave it generally positive reviews, and it became the Weeknd’s second consecutive number-one album when it debuted at the top of the US Billboard 200 with 348,000 album-equivalent units (209,000 of which were pure sales). Additionally, it debuted at the top of the Canadian Albums Chart on Billboard. The Weeknd’s second win in that category came from Starboy, the 60th Annual Grammy Awards’ Best Urban Contemporary Album. The Recording Industry Association of America has certified the album four times platinum as of April 2022 (RIAA). Three more previously remixed releases were included in the deluxe version of “Starboy” (a Kygo remix), “Die For You” (featuring Ariana Grande), and “Reminder” (featuring ASAP Rocky and Young Thug) that the Weeknd released in 2023.

Beauty Behind the Madness yielded five singles, including two number-one hits in the US Billboard Hot 100: “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face”. The lead single from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, “Earned It,” which is nominated for an Academy Award, is also featured on the album. The Weeknd’s album achieved its first week of sales of 412,000 album-equivalent units, making it her first number-one album in the US. With 1.5 million copies sold worldwide, it ranked as the tenth best-selling album of 2015 according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. Beauty Behind the Madness was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards in 2016.
Album : Kiss Land [10 SONGS • 55 MINUTES • SEP 10 2013]
The Weeknd released his debut studio album titled Kiss Land. On September 10, 2013, Republic Records and XO released it. The lead single of the same name, along with “Belong to the World,” “Love in the Sky,” “Live For,” “Pretty,” and “Wanderlust,” served as the album’s backbone. Among those involved in the album’s production were DaHeala, DannyBoyStyles, and the Weeknd. Critics gave Kiss Land mostly favorable reviews. The album sold 95,000 copies in its first week of release, landing it at number two on the US Billboard 200. In the US, the album had sold 273,000 copies as of August 2015.
Album : Echoes Of Silence [10 SONGS • 51 MINUTES • DEC 21 2011]
The Weeknd released his third mixtape, Echoes of Silence, via XO on December 21, 2011. Similar to his previous two mixtapes, Thursday and House of Balloons, The Weeknd worked with musician Illangelo, who produced the majority of the project. Along with brand-new partnerships with producers Clams Casino and DropXLife, the project also included a spoken-word segment by rapper Juicy J. Echoes of Silence explores the Weeknd’s experiences with love and drug use in lyrics that are reminiscent of his earlier work. The promotional single “Initiation” was released on October 10, 2011, prior to the project. Echoes of Silence, an alternative R&B and ambient pop project with trip hop and post-punk influences, won praise from critics all around. It was the Weeknd’s second consecutive nomination for the Polaris Music Prize when it was announced as a longlisted contender. Later, Echoes of Silence was commercially released along with the bonus track “Till Dawn (Here Comes the Sun)” on the compilation album Trilogy (2012). The original mixes were made available along with a limited-edition merchandise line featuring illustrations by Hajime Sorayama in celebration of the album’s tenth anniversary. On December 21, 2021, the illustrator who directed the title track’s music video was made public.
Album : Thursday [10 SONGS • 55 MINUTES • AUG 18 2011]
Canadian artist The Weeknd released his second mixtape on Thursday. XO released it on August 18, 2011. The Weeknd worked with producers and songwriters Doc McKinney and Illangelo, just like on his debut mixtape House of Balloons (2011); the two produced Thursday entirely, with fewer samples than on the previous album. The Toronto-produced mixtape is noteworthy for having Canadian rapper Drake make a guest appearance. Thursday’s music is unique and varied, incorporating elements of hip hop, rock, reggae, dream pop, downtempo, and dubstep. Similar themes to his earlier works, it delves into the Weeknd’s drug use, libertinism, romantic relationships, and experiences with sudden fame. The mixtape’s title alludes to a tense, transparent relationship he once shared with a previous partner. Thursday won praise from critics and was compared to House of Balloons. The song “The Zone” featuring Drake was included in the compilation album Trilogy (2012), which was later commercially released. The original mixes were made available along with a limited-edition merchandise line created by artist Mr. Yanen to commemorate the album’s tenth anniversary.
Album : House Of Balloons [10 SONGS • 53 MINUTES • MAR 21 2011]
The Weeknd released his debut mixtape titled House of Balloons. On March 21, 2011, the artist’s own record label, XO, released it. The mixtape was made available for free on the Weeknd’s website, and after some of its songs were featured on television, the then-anonymous identity of the Weeknd became more widely discussed in the media. Production for House of Balloons was primarily handled by the Weeknd, Doc McKinney, Illangelo, and Cirkut; the Weeknd would go on to work with McKinney and Illangelo on a number of upcoming releases. The entire album was recorded in Toronto. The nickname the singer gave his old Toronto neighborhood, Parkdale, is the source of the song’s title. The mixtape was well-received by critics who praised its lyrical content, production, and dark aesthetic. It is recognized for having been a trailblazer in alternative R&B and is considered as a significant influence on modern R&B music. In terms of music, House of Balloons was renowned for fusing electronic music, indie rock, dream pop, trip hop, and R&B. The Weeknd’s experiences with love, heartbreak, and promiscuity are explored lyrically in the mixtape, along with his drug use. House of Balloons was commercially released along with the bonus track “Twenty Eight” and the singles “Wicked Games” as part of the compilation album Trilogy (2012). The original mixtape was made available digitally on its tenth anniversary, featuring samples that Trilogy was unable to obtain copyright clearance for. Daniel Arsham, an architect, created a limited edition merchandise line to go along with the reissue.
The Weeknd Ringtones
The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye and who was born on February 16, 1990, is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is well-known for his unorthodox approach to music production, creative reimaginings, and distinctive use of the falsetto register. In addition to nominations for an Academy Award and a Primetime Emmy Award, his achievements include four Grammy Awards, twenty Billboard Music Awards, twenty-two Juno Awards, six American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and a Latin Grammy Award.
Tesfaye, who was raised in Toronto, started his career in 2009 by posting music on YouTube under a pseudonym. After two years, he co-founded XO Records and put out the mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. These songs became well-known for his blend of alternative and contemporary R&B and the mystery surrounding his identity. After signing a record deal with Republic Records in 2012, he reissued the mixtapes for his album Trilogy. His first studio album, Kiss Land (2013), explored dark wave and debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200. Following its release, Tesfaye started working on movie soundtracks. His critically acclaimed 2014 single “Earned It” from the 2015 film Fifty Shades of Grey was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance.
With his pop-leaning second album Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), Tesfaye achieved both critical and commercial success. The album peaked at number one in the US, featured the US Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping singles “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills,” and was nominated for Album of the Year and won the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Along with the US number-one lead single of the same name (featuring Daft Punk) and “Die for You,” his trap-infused third album Starboy (2016) enjoyed similar commercial success and took home the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. In 2018, Tesfaye made a comeback to the alternative R&B genre with his debut extended play, My Dear Melancholy, which featured the US top ten single “Call Out My Name.” His highly regarded fourth studio album After Hours (2020) delves into new wave and dream pop, and includes the chart-topping single “Blinding Lights” as well as the US number-one hits “Heartless” and “Save Your Tears.” Motivated by dance-pop, his fifth album Dawn FM (2022) featured the US top-ten hit song “Take My Breath.” He co-created and starred in the critically panned drama series The Idol in 2023, though the soundtrack to the show saw some degree of commercial success.
Tesfaye is one of the best-selling musicians in the world, having sold over 75 million records. She also owns multiple streaming and Billboard chart records. He is the first musician from Canada to receive four diamond certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the first to occupy the top three positions on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at the same time. In addition to becoming the most-streamed song in Spotify history, “Blinding Lights” also became the best-performing song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 and the song with the longest charting run by a solo artist on the chart. Time named Tesfaye one of the most influential people in the world in 2020, and Guinness World Records named her the “world’s most popular artist” in 2023. He is a supporter of food security and racial equality, and in 2021 the World Food Programme named him a Goodwill Ambassador.
Tesfaye lists Prince, R. Kelly, and Michael Jackson as his three main musical influences. He has said that Michael Jackson’s songs played a major influence in inspiring him to become a singer, giving the song “Dirty Diana” as an example. Ethiopian singers like Aster Aweke had an influence on his amazing vocal style. He was exposed to a wide range of musical styles as a child, such as post-punk, indie rock, hip hop, funk, and soul. Tesfaye attributes “opening my eyes” to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) for introducing her to the music of the 1980s, an era on which she is heavily influenced. “I’ve always been in awe of the time before my birth,” he declared in a Billboard interview. “You can hear it as far back as my first mixtape that the ’80s – Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cocteau Twins – play such a huge role in my sound.”
When creating House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence, Tesfaye cited Deftones as one of his influences. In addition, he has mentioned the Smiths, Eminem, 50 Cent, DeBarge, Talking Heads, Lana Del Rey, David Bowie, and the Wu-Tang Clan as influences and inspirations. Tesfaye gave Daft Punk acclaim when they announced their split in 2021, saying in an interview with Variety, “Those guys are one of the reasons I make music, so I can’t even compare them to other people…”
Tesfaye showcases her songs with slow tempos, rumbling bass, and desolate echoes, all of which are “built around a fogged, crepuscular production”. Unconventional R&B production samples, such as punk, shoegaze, dream pop, and alternative rock samples, are used in his songs. Marc Hogan of Spin reports that Tesfaye typically samples artists like Beach House, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Aaliyah, “to draw from rock critic-approved sources, though generally ones that already share elements of his sexual menace”. The producers Illangelo and Doc McKinney, with whom Tesfaye collaborated most, are credited by Pitchfork’s Ian Cohen with creating “a state-of-the-art R&B template” for the singer. Tesfaye reappropriates his digital productions with an arena rock aesthetic akin to a suite when performing live.
Particularly in After Hours and House of Balloons, his poignant, melancholic lyrics frequently deal with themes of partying, drugs, and sex while expressing hurt feelings. Tesfaye’s music is described as “narcotised-slow jams” by Hermione Hoby of The Guardian, who also summarises the message as “partying is an existential experience, sex is fraught with alienation, and everything registers as unreal and unsettling.” Tesfaye’s three mixtapes, according to Paul MacInnes of The Guardian, are “a rough trajectory of party, after-party and hangover.” The Toronto Standard’s Anupa Mistry describes the mixtapes as featuring a “cast of supine, stoned zombie-women… whose legs willingly part after being plied with substances and who morph into threats only when [he is] coming down and feeling vulnerable.” Tesfaye claims that he is “paying homage to R Kelly, and even Prince to a certain extent” by singing vulgar, ignorant lyrics in a sophisticated, seductive manner.
Tesfaye frequently sings in a high falsetto. His “tremulous quality” in singing is compared to Michael Jackson’s by J. D. Considine, who notes that he rejects Jackson’s “strong basis in the blues” in favor of a melisma with more Arabic influences. Tesfaye is a light-lyric tenor with a broad vocal range spanning more than three octaves. His vocal range has a natural tessitura in the upper fourth octave and reaches its lowest point at the bass F (F2) and its highest point at the tenor G♯ (G♯5). Tesfaye frequently uses his head voice to create resonance and hit powerful notes in the fifth octave. There’s no denying Tesfaye’s distinctive Ethiopian voice. “His trademark vibrato, the characteristically pained whine that pervades much of Tesfaye’s music, draws from a long Ethiopian musical legacy of tortured pining,” writes Hannah Giogis of Pitchfork. A defining characteristic of Ethiopian musical tradition is imbuing our voices with the tremulous pain of loss, whether it be romantic or not. Tesfaye, a youthful addition to a dynasty of dramatic Ethiopian singers, is known for his staccato wails and heartbreaking nostalgia.” The Weeknd was placed 110th on Rolling Stone’s list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2023.
Pop, R&B, hip hop, dance, alternative, and new wave genres are all represented in Tesfaye’s discography. Because of his contributions to expanding the musical palette of the genre to include indie and electronic styles, his work is typically classified as alternative R&B. Mistry claims that he “will be obsequiously praised as the future of R&B music—because Tesfaye is a black singer, not because he’s making quantifiable, canonical R&B.” In a 2015 interview with Time, Tesfaye discussed his feelings about the main label, saying, “Alternative R&B is in my soul.” It is not going to disappear. People said that I had brought R&B back to prominence when I released songs from House of Balloons in 2010. That’s when the label was probably made, I’m thinking. I’m honored that it has influenced a significant portion of modern music, either intentionally or unintentionally. Being grandiose and ambitious was the only way I could have accomplished that.” Dream pop, post-punk, trip hop, and other influences are all incorporated into Tesfaye’s alternative R&B projects on her first three mixtapes, House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. Kiss Land, his first studio album, falls into the R&B and dark wave genres. His next three albums are classified as R&B and pop: Beauty Behind the Madness, Starboy, and After Hours. Starboy incorporates strong trap influences, while After Hours draws inspiration from new wave and dream pop. The dance-pop and synth-pop genres are explored on Tesfaye’s fifth studio album, Dawn FM.
In addition to her 22 Juno Awards, Tesfaye has won twenty Billboard Music Awards, six American Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, four Grammy Awards, and a Latin Grammy Award. In addition, he has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy and an Academy Award. The Allan Slaight Honour was given to Tesfaye by the Canadian Walk of Fame in October 2014 in recognition of her “making a positive impact in the fields of music, film, literature, visual or performing arts, sports, innovation or philanthropy”. In honor of Tesfaye’s Super Bowl halftime show, Toronto mayor John Tory declared February 7, 2021, to be “The Weeknd Day” in the city.
